Disability Ratings
When injuries result in permanent disabilities, physicians will often assign an “anatomical disability rating.” Physicians will identify the plaintiff’s diagnoses and permanent restrictions resulting from those injuries. Physicians will then use medical books to derive this “disability rating.” Of course, a person with permanent weight lifting restrictions from a neck surgery will have a lower “disability rating” than a person who suffers from quadriplegia. However, when a person has been assigned a “disability rating,” the jury or judge may award a separate amount of money for compensate for this particular form of harm and permanent loss.
